Writer, Reader, or Anything Else?

My adorable friend Olivia and I went to a Writers and Readers Conference at UVU yesterday. It was SO fantastic. I got to hear from fabulous authers like Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series and finisher of Wheel of Time), James Dashner (13th Reality and soon to be released Maze Runner), Stephen Covey, Maria Covey Cole, Rachel Nunes, and Tristi Pinkston. Also so many others, I just didnt get a chance to hear from them all like Josi Kilpack, J. Scott Savage, Lisa Mangum, Annette Lyon, Patrick Muir, Anita Stansfield and Robison Wells (and more).

Shout out to my hubs was sweet enough to play with the kids all day while I went a learnin'. I even came home to a cleaner-than-I-left-it house. Brownie points.

Obviously the conference was attended by a lot of writers but I got to thinking: If I could do anything in the business, what would I be. I think my top few choices would be reader (you know, someone who actually gets paid), a publicist and perhaps a writer.

I know unlike my movie question a while ago, not everyone is as eager to work in this field. Are you? What would tickle your fancy?

Also I caved. If you want to follow me on twitter my name is.....cranberryfries.

Not at all. I read a lot of blogs where the blogger is either a current author or wants to get published. But that's not a desire of mine in the least.

Oh, I'd love to be an author. Right now I wrote for myself, for fun, for escape... but I'd love to actually publish.

My dad worked for Gibbs Smith publishing here in Utah when I was a baby so I've always been interested in publishing. Reading would be awesome too.

I like the idea of reading someones book, being a champion of it, and helping a first time author realize their dreams.

It was SO FUN! Thanks for coming with me. It was a blast!

I would love to write entertaining nonfiction. A collection of essays or something.

As much as I'd like to be a reader---I'm proby too picky in my tastes for me to be any good.

I don't have a desire, but it is just because I am afraid of failing too! I am too insecure of what I write. =)

It was a great conference, and so fun to meet new people!

I guess the answer for me is pretty obvious. :D

You're one of about 200 people I didn't get to meet on Thursday--bummer! It really was a great conference.

I would love to read manuscripts for content. Totally.

I was flipping channels last night and saw country singer Miranda Lambert and thought she looked a lot like you! Has anyone ever said that to you before?

Well, I'm going back to school so I can become an editor. I'd love to read manuscripts and help make them better. I really want to be a freelance copy editor for new authors, so that they can have an edge when they try to sell their manuscripts to publishers.

I'd also love to be a writer, but I'm still not sure how I'd do as one. Once I get into my creative writing classes in school, we'll see. ;)

Is there a job where I can get paid to read magazines? At one point I subscribed to 9. I'm not interested in writing anything.

I would have loved to attend that writer's conference, that would have been and I recognize some of the author's!

I've already finished writing children's books and have tried getting it published. (I took a few courses on getting your work published) It's another beast to tackle submitting it to publishers and then trying to get a literary agent. But, if the dream is big enough, who cares about the obstacles? I just need to be more organized and set aside time to do it!

I would love to be an author. But knowing me, I don't have hopes of that happening. However, I would also love to be a reader or an editor. Getting paid to read books? Can't even think of a better job than that.

I definitely would NOT want to be a publicist.... That required too many nights, weekends and dealing with cranky people.
Hope your weekend is good.

I would love to be a writer. I think I would make a pretty good editor, too. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty. And I would love for Brandon Sanderson to finish that last book. Because I've been in mourning over "Robert Jordan" long enough. Want something to write about? How about a post (and it better be good) about why "Cranberry Fries???"
